VCU Interior Design
VCU Sculpture

VCU's Interior Design Department has taught me a number of different things: lighting, color theory, building systems, materials, group work, technical skills, concept development, business principals, graphics, ...

Some of the most important lessons:

Dedication to a goal will drive you to achieve almost anything.

Failure in a process isn't a bad thing.

The design process never ends.

Making and building gives me a sense of accomplishment, and learning the skills needed to make and build provides me with endless excitement and enthusiasm. At first sculpture was the outlet to build big when interior design had me building small models.

In my last year, I learned more about how making every piece of a sculpture isn't necessary, and that the expression of an idea or feeling - no matter how untethered is the main goal.  This has driven my work to more exploration of all the thoughts and observations that keep me up at night instead of trying to approach a project with a completely mapped out plan before manipulating materials.
